Athens is gritty, chaotic, and full of life, a city where ancient ruins sit next to graffiti-covered apartment blocks and a buzzing cafe culture. It's affordable by European standards, sunny most of the year, and increasingly a base for digital nomads drawn by cheap rent and the Mediterranean lifestyle. The downsides are real: bureaucracy is maddening, summers are punishingly hot, and parts of the city feel rough around the edges. But for the price, the energy and access to islands are hard to beat.
