Chiang Mai is the original digital-nomad capital: dirt-cheap, laid-back, ringed by mountains and temples, with a moated old city full of cafes built for laptops. The cost of living is among the best in the world for the quality you get, and the nomad community is large and well-established. The big catch is burning season from roughly February to April, when crop fires choke the air and many residents leave. Best for budget-focused remote workers and wellness types who want a calm, affordable base outside burn season.
