La Paz is a jaw-dropping city sprawled across a canyon at over 11,000 feet, with cable cars gliding between neighborhoods and the Andes towering above. It's one of the cheapest and most culturally distinct capitals in South America, intensely indigenous and chaotic in the best way, but the altitude is severe, infrastructure is basic, and it's a hard place to live comfortably long-term. It suits adventurous, budget-driven people who want something genuinely different. Not for those needing modern comforts or oxygen.
