Montañita is a small, ramshackle surf-and-party village on Ecuador's coast, equal parts good waves and all-night cocktail-street revelry. It's cheap, warm, and easy to fall into a beach-bum rhythm, but it's also dusty, basic, and very party-centric, which gets old fast for anyone not there to surf and drink. It suits young surfers and travelers wanting sun, waves, and nightlife on the cheap. Not a place for comfort, quiet, or long-term depth.
