Muscat

Persian Gulf · Oman · Asia

Whitewashed, mountain-ringed Gulf capital of forts, wadis, and a calm, traditional pace.

Muscat is the Gulf's most understated capital: low-rise, clean, wrapped in dramatic mountains and coastline, with a culture that prizes calm over Dubai-style flash. English is widely spoken, the diving and wadis are spectacular, and it's notably safe and orderly. The tradeoffs are scorching summers, a car-dependent layout, limited nightlife given conservative norms, and a higher cost of living than much of Asia. Best for outdoor-loving professionals wanting Gulf comfort without the glitz.

A large professional expat community alongside hospitable Omani locals; it's polished, family-oriented, and reserved socially. Easy to meet other expats through work and clubs, though nightlife is muted and alcohol restricted.
