Osaka is Japan's kitchen and its most extroverted big city, blunter and funnier than Tokyo, with a street-food culture that runs from takoyaki stalls to Michelin counters. It's a major metro with great transport, nightlife in Namba and Dotonbori, and lower rents than the capital. You get big-city energy without Tokyo's intensity or price, though it's dense, summers are sweltering, and the foreign community is smaller.
