Rotterdam is the Netherlands' boldest, most modern city, rebuilt after WWII into a showcase of striking architecture, a buzzing food scene, and a working-port edge. It's more affordable and less touristy than Amsterdam, diverse, and refreshingly unpretentious, with excellent cycling infrastructure. It lacks the canal-house charm some expect from Holland and the weather is grey and wet. Great for design-minded, international people who want a forward-looking Dutch city without Amsterdam's prices and crowds.
